Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The message is the game's whole premise on a pop-up: nothing here is free, and even a small kindness or a lie can ripple outward like the butterfly beside it. It works because Max can rewind, so the warning is a dare as much as a threat. Players still repeat it as a joke about any rash decision, usually with a butterfly attached, whenever a choice feels bigger than it looks.

Spoilers for Life Is StrangeShow the scene

This is the on-screen warning of Life Is Strange, the episodic adventure from Dontnod Entertainment whose first episode, Chrysalis, arrived on 29 and 30 January 2015. When Max Caulfield makes a significant choice, a dialogue option or an interaction that can freeze the scene, a butterfly symbol appears at the top of the screen with this message. Max then usually comments on what she has done, and she can use her rewind power to undo it and pick differently. At the end of each episode the game shows how the player's choices compare with those of friends and with global statistics.
