Humiliation!

— Quake III Arena  ·  1999

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Humiliation is a single word that turns a kill into a taunt. The Gauntlet is slow and easy to dodge, so landing it on a human is a statement of contempt, and the announcer rubbing it in is the joke players share. Fans quote it for any embarrassing defeat or deliberate show-off move, whether or not a Gauntlet is anywhere in sight.

Spoilers for Quake III ArenaShow the scene

In Quake III Arena (id Software, released December 2, 1999), "Humiliation!" is the announcer's voice for the Gauntlet medal. The Gauntlet is the spinning melee weapon every player spawns holding next to the machine gun. Land a kill with it and the medal logo appears on screen as the announcer says the word, and the whole point is the insult: you have killed an opponent without even bothering to shoot them. Shoving someone away from a power-up with it, without a kill, gets a different call, "Denied!"
