Impressive!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is praise earned by aim rather than luck: two straight railgun hits, and the game itself tips its hat. The word became the standard compliment for a clean piece of skill in shooters, and Quake players still use it, sometimes sarcastically, for any good shot. Its calm, almost bored tone alongside the roar of the match is part of the charm.

Spoilers for Quake III ArenaShow the scene

In Quake III Arena (1999), "Impressive!" is the announcer's call for the railgun medal. The railgun is a slow-firing weapon that rewards accuracy, and the medal is earned by landing two consecutive accurate railgun shots without a miss. When it happens the medal icon flashes up and the announcer says the word, and everybody in the game hears it. Players nicknamed the weapon the winstick for how much it decides fights. Other medals include Excellent, for two frags within two seconds, and Humiliation for Gauntlet kills.
