Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
It is a dying man's last account, and a plea for Dutch to see what he did to him. Arthur has given his loyalty, years and life, and the line makes no demand beyond being heard. Dutch's silence is the answer. Players quote it as the saddest line in the game, and it turns up on memorial posts and fan art whenever the story is mentioned.

Chapter 6, Beaver Hollow, in the mission "Red Dead Redemption". After the camp falls apart, Arthur, dying of tuberculosis, sends John on alone over the mountains and is tackled by Micah. They brawl, and Arthur loses his revolver. Dutch steps on his hand and tells him it is over. Arthur insists Micah is the rat and says this line to Dutch, then adds that John was the only one who made it. Dutch says nothing, walks away, and the ending that follows depends on Arthur's honor.
