Dutch van der Linde

I have a plan.

— Red Dead Redemption 2  ·  2018

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Dutch's "plan" starts as a promise and ends as a warning. The more often the gang hears it, the less it means, and players learn to hear the cracks in his certainty well before Arthur does. The line is now shorthand, in and out of the game, for a confident boss with no real plan.

Dutch van der Linde, voiced by Benjamin Byron Davis, is the charismatic leader of the Van der Linde gang in Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018). Whenever the gang is cornered, the plan is always his: after the Blackwater ferry robbery goes wrong in 1899, he keeps the gang together by promising one more big score, then a getaway to Tahiti. Each new scheme (the Saint Denis trolley station job, stealing horses from an Army ferry for the Wapiti) is sold to Arthur Morgan as the way out.
