Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Few menu items ever mocked the player so well. The name makes asking for easy mode sound like a child begging a parent for a turn, so picking it feels faintly shameful, which is the joke. Later Wolfenstein games kept the line as a tribute to the original menu, and it remains the best-known way a shooter has teased its own players.

Spoilers for Wolfenstein 3DShow the scene

This is the easiest of the four difficulty settings in Wolfenstein 3D (id Software, 1992), chosen from the menu before an episode begins. On it, all damage taken by B.J. Blazkowicz is divided by four. The other levels are "Don't hurt me.", the default "Bring 'em on!" and the hardest, "I am Death incarnate!". The names were reused as difficulty levels in later Wolfenstein games, although Return to Castle Wolfenstein dropped this one except in Operation Resurrection and Tides of War.
