I want you to stop trying to control my life just because you can’t control yours!
— 10 Things I Hate About You ‧ 1999
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The speaker demands that someone stop dictating their life, accusing them of doing it because their own life feels out of control. It is a pointed reversal: the controlling behaviour is presented as displacement, the other person's disorder being pushed onto the speaker.
