It's too bad she won't live! But then again, who does?

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

An apparent expression of pity for one person becomes a question about everyone. The final turn makes the prospect of death universal, changing the scale of the first remark. What begins as a statement about her future ends by denying that anybody escapes the same basic limit.

Gaff arrives on the rooftop just after Roy Batty has died, having saved Deckard's life, and compliments Deckard on a job well done. Then he calls out this parting remark about Rachael, the replicant Deckard has been ordered to retire and has left at his apartment. When Deckard collects her, he finds a small origami unicorn on the floor, recalls Gaff's words, and leaves with her.
