Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Lightning hands Doc's bitter lesson back to the world with a smile. Doc, once the Fabulous Hudson Hornet, spent years angry that the sport forgot him, and the trophies were all he had to show for it; Lightning, who has just gained friends, can see that winning is not the point. It is the line fans use to shrug off a lost trophy, or a lost argument, for something that matters more.

The last race of Cars (2006), the decider after the season ended in a three-way tie for the Piston Cup. Lightning McQueen gives up his chance to win and pushes the old champion The King over the finish line so he can end his career on a finish. Chick Hicks tells him he has just thrown away the Piston Cup, and Lightning says a grumpy old racecar he knows once told him it is just an empty cup. That car is Doc Hudson, who earlier called his own trophies a bunch of empty cups.
