Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Doc's line sounds like nonsense and works like a koan: control comes from steering into the slide instead of fighting it. Lightning's mocking compression of it is the version everyone remembers, and the film's whole mentor arc is hidden in it, as the cocky rookie finds that the old man really does know racing. Fans say it about any advice that sounds backwards and turns out to be true.

Spoilers for CarsShow the scene

In Radiator Springs, Lightning McQueen crashes on the dirt track outside town and finds grumpy local judge Doc Hudson watching. Doc tells him you have to pitch the car hard and break it loose, and says that if he goes hard enough left he will find himself turning right. Lightning scoffs, calls Doc a crazy old car and repeats it mockingly. He then tries it, goes right and is amazed. Later, in Cars 2, Mater reminds him of Doc's lesson on a dirt section in Tokyo.
