The joke is that Lloyd treats a pop song as a travel guide and feels personally betrayed when the geography does not match the lyrics. It sums up the film's central pair: total confidence, no map, and someone else to blame. Fans use the line for any time a song, ad or guidebook has promised more than the real place delivers.

In Dumb and Dumber (1994), Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne are driving to Aspen, Colorado to return a briefcase to its owner. Harry wakes up after about five hours asleep and looks out at a flat landscape, remarking that he expected the Rocky Mountains to be rockier. Lloyd, who has been at the wheel, agrees and blames John Denver, whose song Rocky Mountain High sold him the idea, with the line quoted here. Harry then works out that they have driven almost across the country in the wrong direction, and the pair are left with too little money for Aspen or home.
