The Spacing Guild's secret report in David Lynch's Dune (1984); a film line, not in the novel

The spice must flow.

— Dune  ·  1984

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Four words that state the economy of the whole galaxy: the Guild does not care who rules, only that the spice, and so space travel, keeps moving. It escaped the cult film into everyday speech for any supply that cannot stop, and games such as World of Warcraft have riffed on it directly.

In David Lynch's Dune (1984), the line closes a secret report from inside the Spacing Guild early in the film. Four planets have come to the Guild's attention over a plot that could endanger spice production: Arrakis, Caladan, Giedi Prime and Kaitain. A third-stage Navigator is to be sent to Kaitain to demand details from the Emperor, and the report ends on this line. The Navigator then confronts Emperor Shaddam IV. The phrase is not in Herbert's novel.
