Our interpretation.
Spicoli's whole philosophy in one sentence, said with total sincerity and no ambition at all, which is exactly why it landed. It is the manifesto of the lovable slacker, the surfer who would rather be nowhere near a career. Sean Penn's performance made the character a template for every stoner sidekick since, and the line still turns up on beach shirts, bumper stickers and surf shop walls.

Late in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), the stoned surfer Jeff Spicoli wanders into the Mi-T-Mart where Brad Hamilton has taken a new job. While Spicoli counts out change for his snacks, Brad asks why he does not get a job himself, and Spicoli gives his reply. He asks to use the bathroom, and while he is gone an armed robber walks in; Spicoli's accidental distraction helps Brad foil the hold-up. Cameron Crowe wrote the script from his book about a year undercover at a San Diego high school; Amy Heckerling directed.
