Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the whole philosophy of the film in a breath: a free day with nothing at stake, which turns out to have plenty at stake. Fans say it every Friday in Chris Tucker's rhythm, and it helped make the film a weekly ritual more than a stoner comedy. It also sums up Smokey, who is always sure the day is on his side.

Spoilers for FridayShow the scene

Friday plays out on one day in South Central Los Angeles. Craig Jones has just been fired, and his friend Smokey, a small-time dealer, turns up to keep him company. Smokey tells Craig, who does not smoke, that he is going to get him high today, because it is Friday, he has no job and he has nothing to do. The day goes wrong fast: Smokey owes supplier Big Worm $200 by 10 pm and drags Craig into it. Ice Cube and DJ Pooh wrote the film.
