Peter's deadpan sums up the film's central gag: the end of the world arrives as a childhood treat, and the only man who wasn't supposed to think of anything is the one who thought of that. The 'what have you got left' lets Egon, the team's cool scientist, admit he has nothing but fear. Fans quote 'gone bye-bye' for any friend who has fumbled a plan badly enough to doom everyone.

At the climax of Ghostbusters (1984), the team stands on the rooftop temple above Dana Barrett's apartment building while the god Gozer demands that they choose the form of the destructor. Ray Stantz, trying to empty his mind, thinks of the most harmless thing he can, a mascot from his childhood, and Gozer reappears as a skyscraper-sized Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. As Ray looks close to tears about camp roasts, Peter Venkman tells Egon that Ray has gone bye-bye and asks what he has left. Egon replies that he is terrified beyond rational thought.
