Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the line that shows how much Ray believes in the business: his family home, the place he was born, goes on the table for a ghost-catching start-up. It sets him up as the film's heart, the one who still believes in the paranormal and in his friends. Fans quote it as the pitch-perfect cry of anyone watching their sensible side lose to a friend's wild plan.

Spoilers for GhostbustersShow the scene

Early in Ghostbusters (1984), Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz and Egon Spengler have just been thrown out of Columbia University. Peter argues that it is fate, and that they should go into business for themselves with an ecto-containment system, which will need a load of capital. The money is Ray's: he is mortgaging the house his parents left him. He protests that he was born there, while Peter assures him that nobody will lose the house since everybody has three mortgages nowadays. Ray's worry is the 19 percent rate.
