Listen! You smell something?

— Ghostbusters ‧ 1984

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the hinge of the film's first scene: the moment the sceptic's investigation stops being a joke and the scientists follow their noses to the first real physical evidence of a ghost. Ray's wide-eyed enthusiasm is the contrast with Peter, and the line has lived on as the go-to way to announce that something is off, from a kitchen fridge to a suspicious plot twist.

Spoilers for GhostbustersShow the scene

Still in the New York Public Library stacks in Ghostbusters (1984), Ray, Egon and Peter have just found the huge, impossibly neat stack of books. With Egon's P.K.E. meter reading hot, Ray suddenly turns, tells the others to listen, and asks if they smell something. Peter sniffs the air. The scent leads them on to the card catalogue the fleeing librarian Alice ran from, where cards are scattered everywhere and clear ectoplasm is splashed around. Egon holds out a petri dish and has Peter take the first sample of slime.
