In M's office overlooking the Thames and Westminster at dusk, Bond stands with his back to us facing M, a silhouette at the tall window.

M

I think you're a sexist, misogynist dinosaur. A relic of the Cold War.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

This is the franchise talking to its own audience. Bond had been away for six years and the Cold War was over, so M says aloud what critics were thinking, and the Brosnan era earns the right to keep the style while knowing the joke. Dench's flat delivery made M the one person in the room Bond cannot charm, and the line is still the shorthand for a boss who sees straight through the swagger.

Spoilers for GoldenEyeShow the scene

In GoldenEye (1995), Pierce Brosnan's Bond has been sent for a psychological evaluation on the road above Monaco, and back at MI6 he has to face the new head of the Service. Judi Dench's M, the first woman to play the role in the films, tells him she does not like him or his methods, then delivers her verdict: a sexist, misogynist dinosaur, a relic of the Cold War. She adds that she has no compunction about sending him to his death, but will not do it on a whim. Bond's reply is a quiet "Point taken."
