Brawndo's slogan, Idiocracy (2006)

Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the film's sharpest joke about advertising: a slogan so familiar that nobody can think past it, even as the evidence rots in front of them. People quote it whenever an argument mistakes a brand claim for fact, and 'electrolytes' became shorthand for the whole movie's warning that marketing can replace reasoning.

Spoilers for IdiocracyShow the scene

In Idiocracy (2006), Joe Bauers, an Army librarian frozen in a hibernation experiment, wakes up five hundred years later to a crumbling, dumbed-down America. Appointed Secretary of the Interior and given a week to fix the food shortage, he discovers that the nation's crops are being irrigated with Brawndo, the sports drink. He argues to the cabinet that watering them with real water would help. Their unshakeable reply, the commercial slogan repeated as logic, is this line. Brawndo's electrolytes, the film explains, have in fact been killing the topsoil.
