The Costco greeter, Idiocracy (2006)

Welcome to Costco, I love you.

— Idiocracy  ·  2006

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The greeting is shorthand for the way a brand can talk to you with the warmth of a recording and call it love. Because it is delivered in a dead monotone, it lands as both a gag and a gentle jab at corporate cheerfulness, and shoppers have been muttering it in real Costco car parks ever since.

Spoilers for IdiocracyShow the scene

Near the end of Idiocracy (2006), Joe and Rita head for the time machine that could send Joe home, and find it housed inside a giant Costco. The store's recorded greeter chants a flat, cheerful welcome to every arrival, and Joe is soon identified by a tattoo scanner and apprehended. According to Wikipedia, Terry Crews recalled that the film used real corporate names because the companies hoped to be 'pumped up', and the monotone Costco line was the response.
