Don't be what they made you.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The line is the superhero film's quiet answer to the question of what a weapon is for. A man who spent his life as a killing machine does not tell his daughter to avenge him, only not to become him. It is the emotional summit of the Wolverine saga, a request for freedom rather than a battle cry, and fans quote it as a goodbye and a blessing.

Spoilers for LoganShow the scene

In the forest near the Canadian border, the last fight of Logan (2017) is over: Laura has shot X-24, the feral clone of Logan in his prime, and Logan, mortally wounded, lies dying. He tells Laura to take her friends, the Transigen children heading for the border, and hide, because the pursuers will keep coming. Then he tells her she no longer has to fight and not to become what they made her. Laura calls him daddy, and Logan dies in her arms. Hugh Jackman's final turn as Wolverine closes here.
