Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The casual address can sound friendly or like the last warning before a fight. Wolverine makes little effort to polish the difference. A single familiar word carries the abrasion that sets him apart from more formal superhero voices.

‘Bub’ is Wolverine's recurring form of address in the X-Men comics. Tom Brevoort's publication history and a separate comics-to-film account locate an early use in X-Men #94 (1975), as the new team takes shape. This page presents the catchword on its own, without claiming that its first appearance was a standalone one-word balloon. It belongs to the comics before its later screen use.
