Welcome to the X-Men, Kitty Pryde! Hope you survive the experience!

Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The welcome gives Kitty membership and immediately names the cost. For a young recruit, belonging to the team also means entering its hazards. The cheerful first sentence and ominous second one carry the series' promise of adventure in miniature.

These words are the cover caption of X-Men #139 (1980), welcoming Kitty Pryde to the team. They are promotional cover text rather than dialogue spoken by a character. The second sentence turns an apparently warm welcome into a warning about the danger of being an X-Man. This page keeps the caption distinct from the story's spoken lines.
