Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the perfect rule for a lawless town: a brutal contest dressed up as legal process, delivered in the voice of an announcer. The line has become shorthand for any winner-takes-all contest, from sports to boardrooms, and it is chanted at fights and in video games to this day.

Spoilers for Mad Max Beyond ThunderdomeShow the scene

In Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), Max arrives in Bartertown, the trading post ruled by Aunty Entity, who offers to resupply him if he completes a task. Bartertown's law, she explains, is settled by Thunderdome: two men, hand-to-hand, no jury, no appeal, no parole. The words are chanted in the arena itself, where the crowd roars Aunty's name and the master of ceremonies introduces another edition of Thunderdome. The fight Aunty has in mind is against Blaster, the giant bodyguard of the refinery boss Master.
