I promised I'd go with you to a hockey game, and you promised you'd sit through an entire opera.
— Manhattan Murder Mystery • 1993
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The speaker recalls an exchange of promises: attending a hockey game in return for sitting through an entire opera. Pairing the two activities suggests a negotiated effort to accommodate different interests. The emphasis on an entire opera gives the reminder a pointed, slightly comic sense of obligation.
