Kitty!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

One word, said by a toddler to a huge monster, undoes a whole film's worth of fear. It works because Boo never saw a monster at all, only a big friend, and the line gives the story its happy ending without any explanation. Fans quote it as one of the sweetest final beats in animation, and 'Kitty' remains the pet name for Sulley.

Spoilers for Monsters, Inc.Show the scene

Boo, the toddler who wanders out of her closet door into Monsters, Inc., has almost no vocabulary: the only words she says in the film are "Boo", "Kitty", "Ew" and "Mike Wazowski". "Kitty" is her name for the huge, furry James P. Sullivan, and the best-known use is at the very end. After Sulley's door to her room has been shredded, Mike secretly pieces it back together, Sulley fits the last splinter, opens it, and says her name. A small voice answers "Kitty!" Sulley smiles and the film ends. Mary Gibbs voiced her at two and a half, and the crew had to follow her around with a microphone.
