A hooded, gap-toothed bridgekeeper cackles as a knight in a white tabard is flung off a crumbling stone bridge into a grey gorge.

Bridgekeeper: What... is your favourite colour? Galahad: Blue. No, yel-- Auuuuuugh!

What it means

Our interpretation.

The joke is that after Robin's hard question, Galahad's is the easiest of all, and he still blows it by second-guessing himself. It became the standard comic example of failing under pressure and of changing your answer at the worst moment. The three questions are among the most quoted bits of the film, and the long drawn-out scream is as loved as the line.

At the Bridge of Death in Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975, directed by Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones), the bridgekeeper makes each of Arthur's knights answer three questions or be flung into the Gorge of Eternal Peril. Sir Lancelot passes easily, and Sir Robin is hurled over for a question he can't answer. Then Sir Galahad is asked his name, his quest and his favourite colour. He starts to say blue, changes his mind and tries to correct himself, and is thrown into the gorge with a long yell of yellow. The bridgekeeper chuckles, then turns to King Arthur.
