Help! Help! I'm being repressed! Come see the violence inherent in the system! Violence inherent in the system!
— Monty Python and the Holy Grail · 1975
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Dennis turns a king's rough handling into proof of his own argument: the oppressor has just demonstrated the oppression. Python mocks medieval kings and earnest left-wing sloganeering at once, and the cry became shorthand for anyone who provokes a heavy-handed response and then points at it. Fans quote it when an authority overreacts to a mild complaint.

Spoilers for Monty Python and the Holy GrailShow the scene
In Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), Arthur and Patsy, trotting along on imaginary horses, ask a mud-digging peasant what knight lives in the castle. He turns out to be Dennis, who objects to being called "old woman" and lectures Arthur on how kings are chosen. When Arthur says the Lady of the Lake handed him Excalibur, Dennis scoffs that strange women distributing swords are no basis for a system of government. Arthur grabs and shakes him, and Dennis cries the line to the crowd.
