I've heard a great deal about you, Fa Mulan. You stole your father's armor, ran away from home, impersonated a soldier, deceived your commanding officer, dishonored the Chinese Army, destroyed my palace, and... you have saved us all.
— Mulan
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The speaker lists Mulan’s breaches of rules and duty, building what sounds like a severe accusation. The final clause changes the balance by acknowledging that she saved everyone. The speech sets outward disobedience against its extraordinary result, allowing gratitude to emerge from a catalogue of apparent offences.
