I give you the boy. Give me back the man.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The speaker offers up the boy and asks in return for the man, as though childhood could be exchanged for maturity. It reads as a plea shaped like a bargain, longing for someone to come back grown, steady and fully formed.
