Money really means nothing to me. Do you think I’d treat my parents’ house this way if it did?

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Steff offers careless treatment of his parents’ property as proof that money does not matter to him. The defence reveals the comfort behind that indifference. It is easier to dismiss value when someone else supplies the possessions, so the attempted reassurance also exposes the privilege that supports it.
