Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Drago barely speaks, so each line lands like a punch. This one, in a flat Soviet accent, tells you he regards boxing as demolition work, not sport. It became shorthand for icy menace, the line fans quote when a boss or rival walks into the room, and a staple of impressions of the character's blank stare.

Spoilers for Rocky IVShow the scene

In Rocky IV (1985), the fight in Moscow is set for December 25, and Rocky Balboa has trained for it in Russia. As the bout begins, the two men walk to the centre of the ring and a commentator remarks that the Russian towers above the American. Ivan Drago, the Soviet champion who killed Apollo Creed in an exhibition bout, looks down at Rocky and says four words. Rocky's corner tells him to be a rock, and the bell rings.
