Do you know the muffin man? / The muffin man? / Yes, I know the muffin man, who lives on Drury Lane?
— Shrek ‧ 2001
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
A sinister interrogation turns into a nursery-rhyme gag. The joke is that Gingy is stalling with the most childish answer possible, and that Farquaad gets so caught up in the rhyme that he plays along. It gave the film its quotable take on the old song and made a one-scene cookie into a fan favourite who returns in the sequels.

In Lord Farquaad's Duloc dungeon, Gingy the Gingerbread Man is being interrogated about where the other fairy-tale creatures are hiding. After a dunking in milk and Farquaad's threat to pull off his gumdrop buttons, he seems to crack: "Do you know the muffin man?" Farquaad echoes it, Gingy repeats it, and Farquaad finishes the nursery-rhyme line about Drury Lane. Gingy says the woman is married to the muffin man. A guard bursts in with the Magic Mirror before he can say more. Conrad Vernon voices Gingy.
