Lord Farquaad

Some of you may die, but it's a sacrifice I am willing to make.

— Shrek • 2001

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Farquaad is a coward who spends other people's lives like small change, and the joke is that the 'sacrifice' costs him nothing at all. The line is a pitch-perfect parody of every leader who sends others to the front, so it turned into a standard meme for managers asking a team to work late, and for anyone volunteering other people for something hard.

Spoilers for ShrekShow the scene

In the first act of Shrek (2001), the tiny tyrant Lord Farquaad of Duloc, voiced by John Lithgow, decides he must marry Princess Fiona to become a king. Unwilling to rescue her himself, he has his captain round up the finest Duloc knights for a tournament in a packed arena, and the winner will be sent to the dragon's castle. He announces the plan to the assembled knights with the line, shrugging off the risk. The tournament is then interrupted by Shrek and Donkey, who beat the knights and become Farquaad's reluctant champions.
