Our interpretation.
The speaker is saying that standing out in one place felt mild compared with standing out somewhere else. Utah made them look odd, but Wyoming, with its cowboy image, made them seem truly otherworldly. The exaggeration and the parenthetical aside give it a wry, storytelling tone.
