When does this happen in the movie? / Now. You're looking at now, sir. Everything that happens now is happening now.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A film breaking its own fourth wall to mock the VHS age is one thing; making the villains watch the exact scene they are in is the point of the joke. The now/then loop works because Sandurz stays utterly literal while Helmet loses the plot, and it has been quoted ever since as the definition of pointless logic. It also anticipated how spoof and home-video culture fed each other.

Spoilers for SpaceballsShow the scene

In Spaceballs (1987), Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) and Colonel Sandurz (George Wyner) are hunting for Lone Starr and Princess Vespa, who are not showing up on the scanner. Sandurz suggests watching the video cassette of "Spaceballs: The Movie", which exists even though the film is still being made, thanks to a breakthrough in home-video marketing. They fast-forward to the wrong spot, and Helmet asks when the scene happens in the movie. Sandurz tells him it is now, and the exchange spirals into when "then" will be "now". Eventually they find the heroes' location, the moon of Vega.
