The Terminator

Come with me if you want to live!

— Terminator 2: Judgment Day ‧ 1991

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A promise and an order in one breath, and the one line from the first film that the sequel hands back with the roles reversed: the machine now offers the rescue a human soldier once offered. Because it is a stranger's hand held out mid-crisis, it has outlived the franchise and gets shouted by gamers, in parody trailers, and by anyone dragging a friend out of a bad party.

Spoilers for Terminator 2: Judgment DayShow the scene

Kyle Reese first says it in The Terminator (1984), after he shotguns the T-800 at the Tech Noir nightclub and turns to Sarah Connor. In Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) the line comes back in the T-800's flat voice at Pescadero State Hospital. John and the Terminator have come to free Sarah, and the Terminator subdues the hospital staff, reaches a hand toward her, and says it. She takes it and flees with them from the T-1000.
