What it means
Our interpretation.
Gandalf meets fear by enlarging the horizon beyond the immediate siege. The comfort does not remove the danger but changes the shape of the ending Pippin imagines.

During the siege of Minas Tirith in The Return of the King, Pippin fears that the battle will be their end. Gandalf answers with an account of death as a passage and goes on to describe white shores. The film gives this consolation to Gandalf; it should not be confused with Frodo’s related vision in the novel.
