Gollum

My precious.

— The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers • 2002

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Two words hold the whole of Gollum: a love song to the thing that destroyed him. Andy Serkis's split-voiced hiss turned a hobbit pet name into one of cinema's creepiest catchphrases, number 85 on AFI's list of the greatest movie quotes, and fans still use it, half fond and half menacing, for anything guarded far too closely.

Spoilers for The Lord of the Rings: The Two TowersShow the scene

Faramir's Rangers have caught Gollum at the Forbidden Pool and dragged him, bound, into their hidden refuge behind the waterfall at Henneth Annûn. Under Faramir's questioning his two halves argue in front of everyone: Sméagol protests while Gollum spits that the filthy little hobbitses stole it from us. When Faramir asks what they stole, Gollum hisses the answer: "My... precious!" Faramir now has every reason to take the Ring to Gondor.
