Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The film's whole pitch in a sentence: a stranger with a shotgun and a ruined coat offers the only deal that matters. It has become the all-purpose invitation to leave a bad situation, reused in the sequels, where the franchise even hands it to the machine itself.

The Terminator (1984, directed by James Cameron). Sarah Connor, a waitress in Los Angeles, learns that someone is killing women with her name and takes refuge in the Tech Noir nightclub, not knowing that a cyborg assassin from 2029 is closing in. A second man from the future, Kyle Reese, shoots first in the club. In the chaos after the gunfight, he grabs her and tells her to come with him if she wants to live, then escapes with her in a stolen car as the killer rises and follows on foot.
