We know each other! He's a friend from work!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Thor, grinning with relief, treats the Hulk as a colleague he's run into at the office, which is exactly how Ragnarok treats its gods and monsters. It is the clearest example of the film's Waititi-era tone: a giant arena brawl framed as an awkward reunion. It is the line people quote when they spot a colleague in the wild.

Spoilers for Thor: RagnarokShow the scene

Thor: Ragnarok (2017), on the junk planet Sakaar. The Grandmaster has thrown Thor into the Contest of Champions, promising him freedom if he beats the arena's champion. Thor, shackled, is brought out expecting a monster. The champion turns out to be the Hulk, and Thor shouts with delight that they know each other, he is a friend from work. He then fills Hulk in: so much has happened since they last met, he lost his hammer, like, yesterday. The fight that follows has Thor winning until the Grandmaster fixes it by activating the disc on Thor's neck.
