Anatole France

The Law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich, as well as the poor, to sleep under the bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The same prohibition can affect people very differently when their circumstances are unequal. The grand language of legal equality is undercut by examples tied to need and homelessness. The irony exposes a rule that appears impartial while leaving unexamined why one person might have to do what another would never consider.
