Brendan Behan

I'd rather be dead than think about death.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The speaker would prefer death itself to having to think about it. That impossible preference exaggerates how distressing contemplation of mortality feels. The bleak joke makes avoidance its own contradiction: escaping the thought would require accepting the very thing that makes the thought frightening.
