A split lump of coal with a small silver rocket inside and a matchstick ladder leaning against it.

Original artwork, not a still

Charles Bukowski

unless it comes out of your soul like a rocket, unless being still would drive you to madness or suicide or murder, don’t do it. unless the sun inside you is burning your gut, don’t do it.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The poem insists that a pursuit should feel like an overwhelming inner necessity. Its extreme images of madness, suicide and murder describe what suppressed urgency might feel like, while the burning sun makes that compulsion bodily. The repeated refusal rejects work undertaken without such consuming force.
