A small wooden footbridge is crowded with plain wooden blocks above a shallow blue-gray stream.

Frank Lloyd Wright

No stream rises higher than its source. What ever man might build could never express or reflect more than he was. He could record neither more nor less than he had learned of life when the buildings were built.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The speaker argues that a work of building can rise no higher than the understanding of whoever creates it, just as a stream cannot climb above its source. Buildings therefore record only what their makers had learned about life at that time, no more and no less.
