The world is full of wonderful things you haven't seen yet. Don't ever give up on the chance of seeing them.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Rowling gives no spell or plot here, only a kind answer to a stranger who was struggling, and that is why it travelled. Stripped of its tweet and date, it now sits on mugs, bookmarks and graduation cards beside Hogwarts imagery, so many people assume it comes from the books. It is a real Rowling quote, but a message of encouragement rather than a line any character says.

On 4 May 2015 a Twitter user wrote to J. K. Rowling asking what she would say to someone who had failed to find meaning and wanted to give up. Rowling answered from her own account with these two sentences. Entertainment Tonight reported the exchange the next day, 5 May 2015, as a beautiful message to a fan. It is a reply on social media, not a line from any Harry Potter book, film or speech.
