Mark Twain

The cat, having sat upon a hot stove lid, will not sit upon a hot stove lid again. But he won't sit upon a cold stove lid, either.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Twain uses a cat to show how one bad experience can be over-learned. Burned once, the cat avoids the hot lid, which makes sense. Then it avoids a cold one too, and the joke is that caution stops telling real danger from harmless things.
