Mark Twain

We are chameleons, and our partialities and prejudices change place with an easy and blessed facility, and we are soon wonted to the change and happy in it.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Twain compares people to chameleons: our likes and prejudices swap places with surprising ease, and we call that ease a blessing. Once the change has happened we grow used to it and feel content there. The tone is wry, suggesting convictions are less fixed than we like to believe.
