“No wonder Atlantis sank,” muttered Richard. “If they all felt like this in the morning it was probably a relief.”
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Richard turns a miserable morning into a joke about Atlantis sinking. He imagines its people feeling equally awful and suggests that disappearing beneath the sea might then have seemed a relief. The enormous fate of a lost city becomes a measure of present discomfort.
