Churchill won the Nobel Prize in Literature partly for his speeches, so his genuine lines are easy to source -- and yet he still attracts strays: 'If you're going through hell, keep going' has no Churchill provenance at all. The International Churchill Society maintains a 'red herrings' list of quotes he never said. His real wit was often crueler and more spontaneous than the poster versions.
